Playable Stories: Vibe Coding Meaningful Games

Venue
SPACE4, 113 Fonthill Road, London N4 3HH
Format
In-person workshop

An evening on game design for people who don't code. Work out what your game is about and which rule carries the meaning — then let AI build it. For anyone whose work runs on communication and storytelling.

Playable Stories is a series created and hosted by Into Storymode.

This session is a hands-on workshop presented in collaboration with SPACE4, the affordable workspace run by the Outlandish worker-cooperative in Finsbury Park.

What happened last time

Seven people who'd never written a line of code made games at SPACE4 in Finsbury Park. By the end of the evening, those games were about slowing down. About why you started. About saying goodbye.

One person made a game that asks you to play as slowly as you possibly can — a small study in how hard it is to slow down and savour things. The game is the lesson. Another made a game about why you started a business, for the moments when the reason starts to blur. A third made a game in memory of their dog, who'd passed away — a tender way to hold onto a friend.

None of them called themselves game designers when they walked in. What struck me was how quickly people found the thing that makes these games work: when the mechanic, the experience and the message all point the same way. How you play becomes what it's about.

Most walked out with something playable. And every one who gave feedback said they came away feeling more able to make a game that means something — which was the entire point.

This one is about design, not code

The name says vibe coding, but the coding is the easy part. Most of the evening goes on design: deciding what your game is about, what you want a player to feel, and finding the one rule that carries it.

That's the part no machine can do for you. Once the design is clear, describing it to an AI and watching it appear is surprisingly quick — a muddled idea is what makes building hard, not a lack of technical skill.

The idea we keep coming back to:

The mechanic is the message. A game's real story isn't the words on screen — it's the rules. Change the rule, change the meaning.

So we work backwards from the feeling: message → experience → mechanic. Not "what game should I make?" but "what should my audience feel?" — then find the rule that creates it.

Who it's for

Anyone who recognises that communication and storytelling are an essential part of their work — whatever the profession. Community organisers, educators, charity and co-op teams, writers, researchers, facilitators, marketers, designers. And anyone simply curious about whether a game could be a medium for a story they want to tell.

No coding experience and no knowledge of AI tools required. People arrive as non-coders and leave having designed and built something.

What you'll do

  • Play a couple of short games together and find the single rule that carries the meaning
  • Break a convention — a quick pair exercise on the expectations games rely on
  • Finish one sentence: "My game is about ______, and I want the player to feel ______"
  • Turn that sentence into a mechanic somebody can actually play
  • Build it by describing it to an AI, step by step, and publish a link you can share

What to bring

A laptop. That's it.

About Playable Stories

Playable Stories is an independent series hosted by Into Storymode, exploring how games and interactive experiences can become a medium for sharing personal stories.

Across talks, conversations, and hands-on workshops, the series creates a relaxed space for designers, artists, writers, community builders, and curious players to reflect on how stories can become playable.
